Grappling is a term used to describe the physical interaction between two participants in combat sports. It involves techniques where participants attempt to gain control over each other’s body, position, and movement without using strikes or kicks. Grappling focuses primarily on ground fighting, where participants are on the ground and use strategic techniques to achieve dominance over their opponent. This may include locks, chokes, grips, and positional control.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is one of the martial arts strongly associated with grappling. In fact, grappling can be considered the foundation of BJJ. A key distinction between BJJ and general grappling is the use of a gi, a traditional Japanese martial arts uniform, in BJJ. BJJ without the gi, also known as “No-Gi BJJ,” resembles grappling as it focuses on the same ground techniques and positional control but without the gi.

Both grappling and No-Gi BJJ emphasize technical skills, strength, agility, and strategic thinking on the ground. They are often practiced as competitive sports and are also valuable for self-defense and personal safety. The choice between grappling and No-Gi BJJ often depends on the practitioner’s preferences and the style of training they wish to follow.
